Manchester Creative and Media Academy

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been working in partnership with Manchester Creative and Media Academy to develop safety awareness of pupils at the school by co-ordinating a film-makers competition for year 9 learners. The pupils involved are working hard to create short films which can be shown to other pupils at the school highlight the dangers of bonfires and fireworks. Through making the films pupils have the opportunity to develop a variety of skills including team working and communication skills, along with having the opportunity to take part in an enjoyable activity which will allow them to engage positively with the Safe4Autumn messages.

Pupils' comments:

'I have enjoyed what we have been doing during this enrichment activity.  I think it was important as we have learned about fire safety and by making these films other people will learn about the dangers of fire.'  Sara Marsland.

'I enjoyed it because I got to use my creative skills to make a movie and it's really helpful so people know how important it is to not make hoax calls and how dangerous it is.'  Fadeke Ifebajo.

Teacher's comments:

'The pupils were really affected by the film footage and information that the Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service team had to deliver to them on the initial session.  This led to the pupils becoming engrossed in the filming activity over the next 3 weeks.  I have been so impressed by the dedication they have shown and hope that within their personal development lessons they will also be able to share their experiences with the rest of their friends so that pupils are more aware of the dangers surrounding fire.'  Mrs C O'Carroll.

Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service:

'The pupils were really engaged in the project and were full of fantastic ideas for their short films, which will hopefully appeal to other young people in their school and across Greater Manchester.  We have been really impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment that the pupils have shown to the project and have really enjoyed the opportunity to work with Manchester Creative and Media Academy.'  Claire Howarth-Platt, Community Safety Trainer.

'It was very refreshing working with the pupils at the academy,  they had such enthusiasm which was infectious, I am sure all the girls had as much fun as we did and they demonstrated their creative ability and eagerness to learn about fire safety.'  Sue Mallinson, Community Safety Advisor.
